Wossy's joke about his own speech impediment at BAFTA's

Jonathan Ross (Wossy)jokingly referred to his own speech impediment as he hosted the BAFTA's on Monday evening at the Royal Opera House. As expected, 'The King's Speech' swept the board of awards and deservedly so. It's a legendary 'feelgood' film of the kind that doesn't come along often enough.

Wossy also makes people feel good (mostly). It's probably the secret of his success.
How far his success can be attributed to his (very slight) speech impediment is difficult to tell. But, as 'Showbiz Royalty' now, I doubt he'd want to get rid of it. In fact, it's probably a 'no bwainer'!

A speech impediment can be a good way of standing out from the crowd. Remember Chris Eubank and his lisp? The inability to say 'r' is quite common. It even has a name = rhotacism. See this post: http://virtuallinguist.typepad.com/the_virtual_linguist/2009/07/chris-eubanks-lisp.html#tp

Thanks for that 'Virtual Linguist'. Yes, you are right. People like Jonathan Ross or Chris Eubank are surely capitalising on their speech impediments. They do say the first rule of advertising is to 'get attention' and it does seem to be the business of celebrities these days to market themselves as aggressively as possible. Perhaps it was always so and it's just that the methods have changed.
